Library of Virginia State Records Center

The Library of Virginia’s State Records Center is undergoing a major expansion to strengthen its capacity for storing inactive, non-permanent state and local records. This collaborative project between the Library of Virginia and VCU Libraries will add more than 21,000 square feet, increasing total storage capacity to 825,000 cubic feet—enough to support approximately 20 years of growth.

In addition to expanding storage, the project includes the renovation of more than 9,000 square feet of administrative space, creating a more efficient and modern working environment. The new facility will feature high-bay, high-density mobile shelving and a clear interior height of 41 feet, supported by an innovative structural design.

Notably, the building’s exterior structure was completed in just three weeks—a process that could have taken up to six months using traditional construction methods. Scheduled for completion in 2026, the expanded facility will soon be ready for the installation of advanced shelving systems and the next generation of archival operations.
